Thanks anyway, for the good will.
Just for grins I started the download of the first install CD from Red
Hat. The time estimate
fluctuated between 40 and 50 hours as the connection settled down to
1.7-2.0 k/sec. I get
about half the rated speed of this 56 K modem because the phone line runs
about 20 miles
to the switch. I would bet my chances of winning the lottery are greater
than getting the
whole image here without being disconnected. 2-3MB is about the practical
limit for file
downloads out here. Perhaps in a few years DSL will get all the way out
from Folsom.
We're even too far back from the paved road to get cable!
