Tables should never be used for formatting. Use Cascading Style Sheets
Check out the CSS in the HTML I scraped together on my company's site:
http://www.it-group.com. Granted, it's not gonna win any design awards, but
is does use CSS for formatting. And because of that, it also renders well in
lynx and links.
For some good references on using CSS for formatting:
CSS has a learning curve, but it will add a lot to your HTML skill set, and
prepare you for making pages that render well on multiple platforms (PDAs,
text to speech, etc.).

why not use border=0 and just insert your borders as table elements?
