Tables should never be used for formatting. Use Cascading Style Sheets
instead.
Check out the CSS in the HTML I scraped together on my company's site:
http://www.it-group.com. Granted, it's not gonna win any design awards, but
is does use CSS for formatting. And because of that, it also renders well in
lynx and links.

CSS has a learning curve, but it will add a lot to your HTML skill set, and
prepare you for making pages that render well on multiple platforms (PDAs,
text to speech, etc.).
