[brlug-general] Alt-numpad codes

Why is alt-numpad input not supported in Linux? That seems to me to be
much geekier than using a character map program to type an em dash or
a trademark symbol. And Linux is supposed to be the geeky OS, right?
I use em dashes a lot--151--and I like to use proper angled quotes as
well--145-148. And there are quite a few more that I use only on
occasion, but I still know their codes... degrees, cents, UK pounds...
How can I use this knowledge under Linux? From what I can tell, I
can't. Everything I can find about using those characters involves
mapping them to AltGr with an existing key.
Does someone know of a better solution?
Joe
